Specchia dei Mori

Lungo la strada che collega Martano a Martignano, fuori dal centro abitato, è possibile osservare la Specchia dei Mori, un’incredibile testimonianza del passato. Chiamata anche Specchia del Diavolo o in dialetto “segla u demonìu” si presenta oggi con un cumulo di pietre al cui centro si erge un imponente albero. La specchia probabilmente aveva una funzione difensiva, serviva per guardare i confini e scovare possibili invasori. La specchia però è circondata da un alone di mistero e sono molte le leggende che vi girano intorno. Una di esse narra che su edificata nel vano tentativo degli uomini, i mori, di voler raggiungere Dio e per questo vennero puniti, la specchia crollò e rimasero schiacciati sotto le macerie. Un’altra narra che al suo interno sia nascosta, per opera del demonio, una chioccia con i pulcini d’oro.

Along the road that connects Martano to Martignano, outside the town, you can observe the Specchia dei Mori, an incredible testimony of the past. Also called The Devil's Mirror or in dialect "segla u demonìu" it presents today with a heap of stones in the center of which stands an imposing tree. The mirror probably had a defensive function, served to look at the boundaries and find possible invaders. The mirror, however, is surrounded by a halo of mystery and there are many legends circling around it. One of them tells that on and out of the vain attempt ofmen, the Moors, to want to reach Godand for this reason they werepunished, the mirror collapsed and they were crushed under the rubble. Another tells that inside it is hidden, by the devil, a nail with gold chicks.
